The Great Migration: Journey to the North
by: Eloise Greenfield (2011)
This book of poems was written about the migration African American people went through in the 1920's to find work. Many people from the southern states moved north to try and find work. In the north, people were more likely to hire African American workers, rather than in the south. Many people were being mistreated, or not given jobs, because of their race. This book of poems is about the emotions and travels that these people had as they moved north. It gives us an insight that we did not know we were missing. The reader can understand what these people were thinking when they moved away from their families to find a better life.
This book is a perfect to read when either doing a unit on the 1920's and the effect it had on the African American population, or on poetry. More people should know about Eloise Greenfield and her talent as a poet. This book is a wonderful example of her work, and the life that she lead.
